Every couple eventually hits the first-dance question. The two real options: pick a cover that means something, or commission an original song written about your relationship. Both can be beautiful. Both have trade-offs. Here's how to decide.
The case for a cover
A cover song carries cultural weight. Everyone in the room knows it, and the moment your DJ drops it, the photos light up. Familiar songs also cover for awkward dance choreography — the audience is feeling the song, not watching your feet. The risk: by year five, the cultural moment fades. Songs people slow-danced to in 2020 are starting to feel dated.
The case for an original
An original wedding song is the only song in the world that's about you two. The lyrics name your specific moments. The chorus says the thing the celebrant didn't quite manage. Played twenty years later it lands the same as the day you first heard it.
The risk: a bad original song — generic, AI-flavoured, written by someone who didn't ask for the right details — is worse than a great cover. The bar is higher.
What most NZ couples we work with choose
The pattern we see most often: a familiar cover for the first dance, and a custom original played later in the reception — usually during the cake-cutting or as a gift to the partner unveiled at the speech. That way you get both: the cultural anchor of a known song, and the deeply personal moment of an original written for you.
If you're going custom, brief it like this
- The story of how you met (the actual moment, not the LinkedIn version)
- Three small specific details about your relationship that nobody else would know
- The vibe of your wedding — black-tie ballroom or barefoot at the bach
- One song you'd both like yours to feel like (not sound exactly like)
What it costs and how long it takes
A custom wedding song from us is NZD $49, delivered in 24 hours, with one free revision. If you want the song earlier than 30 days before the wedding (recommended), brief us with your three details and you'll have it the next day.
