Graduation gifts are notoriously generic. Pens, watches, money clips. None of them say "I watched you do this." A personalised graduation song does — and unlike the pen, it doesn't get lost by week three of the next chapter.
What kind of graduation are we talking about?
- High school: the years of growing up, the friend group, the teacher who mattered. Lighter, anthem-ish.
- Undergraduate: the move away from home, the housemates, the late nights, the first time they realised they were good at something. Big-feeling, anthemic.
- Postgraduate / PhD: the long road, the moments of doubt, the supervisor who believed (or didn't), the breakthrough. Slower, more deliberate.
- Trades or vocational: the early-morning starts, the first project they finished alone, the mentor. Specific, grounded, proud.
The strongest brief: from the person who watched them through it
Songs from a parent or sibling who watched the slow grind tend to land hardest. Specific moments work better than abstract pride: the morning they almost gave up, the night they realised they could do it, the day the call came through.
What to include in the brief
- Their name and what the family calls them
- The qualification, school, and years
- One moment of struggle, one moment of breakthrough
- One person who mattered (named or unnamed)
- The vibe — anthemic / reflective / quietly proud
- One song that inspired them through the journey
How to deliver it
Print the lyrics inside their graduation card. Hand it to them at the after-party. They read; you play.
Timing
Standard 24-hour turnaround. Order at least 48 hours before the ceremony so you have time to listen to it privately first.
